What is a Double Elimination Bracket?
Every participant starts in the Winners Bracket. A first competitive loss moves that participant into the Losers Bracket instead of ending the tournament. A competitive loss in the Losers Bracket is a second loss and eliminates the participant. The Winners Bracket and Losers Bracket champions then meet in the Grand Final.
This is a two-loss format, not a promise that every participant will play exactly two Matches. A bye can automatically advance a seeded participant without a played Match, and the winner can finish before taking a second loss. A bye is never a competitive win, loss, or fake participant.

How to create a double-elimination bracket
Use the tournament workspace above to build and run a bracket for 4 through 64 participants. The setup flow keeps the roster and the bracket rules visible before any Match is generated.
- Enter a Tournament Name, then add participants one at a time or paste a newline-separated list.
- Choose Bracket Reset when the Winners Bracket champion should have the formal one-loss cushion, or choose Single Grand Final when one final Match decides the event.
- Select Ordered, Random, or Manual Seeding. Manual Seeding must cover every seed from 1 through the participant count exactly once.
- Generate the bracket. Non-power-of-two fields receive automatic byes in the supported bracket size.
- Record each result in the Match Editor. A Score describes the result, but you explicitly select the Winner as a separate fact.
- Follow the displayed Winner and Loser destinations through the Winners Bracket, Losers Bracket, and Grand Final.
Scores never choose a Winner automatically. This keeps an entered score editable while making the progression decision explicit and reviewable.
Winners Bracket, Losers Bracket, and loser routing
A Winners Bracket Winner continues on the Winners side. Its Loser is routed to a formal Losers Bracket slot, where a Losers Bracket Winner continues and a second competitive loss ends that run. BracketMetrik uses deterministic routing for the current bracket topology, so the destination is part of the bracket rather than a hand-drawn guess.
Use Full, Winners, Losers, or Finals to focus the view. When you select a Match, the route panel shows its Winner Destination and Loser Destination. In Full view, the selected loser route is also highlighted so a long Winners-to-Losers path can be followed without tracing every connector yourself.
- Winner Destination
- Where the selected Match Winner advances next.
- Loser Destination
- The Losers Bracket round, Match, and slot receiving a Winners Bracket Loser.
- Bracket views
- Full, Winners, Losers, and Finals provide the same tournament state at different reading scopes.
Grand Final and bracket reset
BracketMetrik makes the final rule explicit before generation. In a Bracket Reset tournament, the Winners Bracket champion reaches GF1 with zero competitive losses and the Losers Bracket champion reaches it with one. If the Winners Bracket champion wins GF1, the Losers Bracket champion takes a second loss and the tournament ends. If the Losers Bracket champion wins GF1, the Winners Bracket champion has its first loss and both finalists now have one, so the Reset Final becomes active.
Single Grand Final is the other supported policy: GF1 is the one final Match that decides the Champion. It does not invent a Reset Final. The policy is visible in the workspace and in the printed Finals view, so participants can know which rule applies before the final begins.
Seeding and automatic byes
Ordered Seeding assigns seed numbers from the roster order. Random Seeding uses the explicit generation-time random draw supplied by the client. Manual Seeding lets you choose the unique sequence 1 through N, where N is the number of participants. These choices determine first-round placement; later Losers Bracket destinations come from the formal topology.
BracketMetrik accepts arbitrary counts from 4 through 64. When the count is not a power of two, it selects the next supported bracket size and places automatic byes using the standard seed structure. A bye is an automatic advance, not a played win, competitive loss, or fake Participant. It does not create a phantom loser for the Losers Bracket.
- Five participants
- Eight-slot bracket with automatic byes.
- All real participants remain identifiable.
- Twelve participants
- Sixteen-slot bracket with automatic byes.
- No bye is counted as a competitive Match.
How many matches are in double elimination?
Let N be the number of actual participants. A normal double-elimination tournament has 2N − 2 competitive Matches. If a Bracket Reset is triggered after GF1, it has 2N − 1 competitive Matches. The formula counts played competitive Matches, not internal structural nodes and not automatic byes.
| Participants (N) | No Reset (2N − 2) | With Reset (2N − 1) |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 6 | 7 |
| 8 | 14 | 15 |
| 16 | 30 | 31 |
| 32 | 62 | 63 |
| 64 | 126 | 127 |
Byes are automatic advances, not played competitive Matches, so the count uses the actual participant number N rather than the padded bracket size.
Correct a result without rebuilding the tournament
A historical Winner can affect two branches in a double-elimination bracket: the Winner path and the Loser path. Before changing a completed decision, BracketMetrik shows an Impact Preview with the affected Matches, completed result data that would be cleared, the Champion before and after, and the Reset Final disposition.
After confirmation, the formal routes are recalculated. Stale scores, Winners, and Losers downstream are cleared before new results are derived, while unrelated branches, schedule details, venues, and notes remain intact. Undo restores the complete earlier Snapshot, so correcting one result does not require rebuilding the tournament by hand.
Local saving, JSON backup, and printing
The current tournament automatically saves in IndexedDB in this browser and restores after refresh. No account is required and there is no cloud sync. Clearing browser site data or losing the browser profile can remove the local copy, so export a JSON Backup when you need a portable recovery file.
JSON Backup supports a browser-wide backup when local storage is available and a current-tournament fallback when it is not. Import can Merge records or Replace local storage after an explicit confirmation. Backup import is a storage operation, not a tournament Undo Action.
Print supports A4 or Letter paper in Landscape with Full, Winners, Losers, and Finals scopes. Large brackets may span multiple pages, while Match Cards stay intact. The browser Print dialog may offer Save as PDF, but BracketMetrik does not provide a separate direct PDF generator.
- IndexedDB auto-save and refresh restore in this browser
- Portable JSON Backup with Merge and confirmed Replace
- A4 or Letter Landscape printing across the selected scope
- Reset-aware state and Snapshot-based Undo/Redo
Single elimination vs double elimination
Choose the format based on how many losses should end a run and how much time the event has for a second bracket path.
| Question | Single Elimination | Double Elimination |
|---|---|---|
| Elimination threshold | One loss | Two competitive losses |
| Structure | One knockout bracket | Winners and Losers brackets |
| Typical count | N − 1 | 2N − 2, or 2N − 1 after Reset |
| Final | One deciding final | Grand Final with the selected reset rule |
| Best fit | Faster, simpler events | Second-chance events with time for more Matches |
For the one-loss format, use the Single Elimination bracket generator. For a schedule in which every pair meets and Standings determine the leaders, use the Round Robin Generator. If a first loss should continue through a Losers Bracket, stay on this Double Elimination page.
